Valencia, Spain in June

Hello, dear readers! It’s your favorite globetrotter, Dorothy Rich, back with another one of my travel escapades. This time, I had the pleasure of visiting the vibrant and beautiful city of Valencia, Spain. Often overshadowed by its famous siblings – Madrid and Barcelona, Valencia is a gem waiting to be appreciated. I traveled solo this time, immersing myself in the city’s rich history, delightful cuisine, and warm hospitality.

The Enchanting Old Town

My journey began in the heart of Valencia, the Old Town. Walking through its narrow, winding streets felt like stepping back in time. The Old Town is home to a plethora of historic buildings, including the Valencia Cathedral, which houses the Holy Grail. However, I recommend venturing off the beaten track to explore the lesser-known La Lonja, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This former silk exchange building boasts stunning Gothic architecture and intricate detailing that is a sight to behold.

The City of Arts and Sciences

Next on my itinerary was the City of Arts and Sciences, an iconic modern architectural complex that is a tourist favorite. However, tucked away nearby is the Turia Gardens, a hidden gem I implore you to explore. This park, transformed from a dried-up riverbed, is the perfect spot for a leisurely bike ride or a tranquil picnic. The lush greenery, dotted with sculptures and playgrounds, offers a peaceful respite from the bustling city.

Valencia’s Gastronomic Delights

No trip to Valencia would be complete without indulging in its renowned cuisine. Of course, you must try paella, Valencia’s most famous dish. But allow me to guide you to a lesser-known culinary delight – horchata. This refreshing drink made from tiger nuts is a local favorite, best enjoyed at the Horchateria de Santa Catalina, an establishment dating back to the 18th century.

The Bohemian Ruzafa

Lastly, I found myself in Ruzafa, Valencia’s trendy and bohemian neighborhood. Bursting with vibrant street art, eclectic shops, and offbeat restaurants, it’s a paradise for the adventurous traveler. My personal recommendation is a visit to the Mercat de Russafa, a local market brimming with fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, and a myriad of delightful goodies.

Valencia is a city that beautifully marries the old with the new, traditional with modern, and known with the unknown. It was a joy to discover its less trodden paths, and I hope my travels inspire you to do the same. Whether you’re a solo traveler like me or with your partner or friends, Valencia promises a memorable experience filled with culture, history, and culinary delights.

Remember, the joy of travel lies not just in visiting the known landmarks but also in uncovering the hidden gems. So, put on your favorite walking shoes, pack your adventurous spirit, and set off to explore the unsung charms of Valencia.

Until next time, happy travels!

Dorothy Rich
