So, I’ve decided to give you a glimpse of Rome’s lesser-known attractions that often go unnoticed but are equally fascinating.
1. The Non-Catholic Cemetery
First on our list is the Non-Catholic Cemetery. This quiet, serene oasis is a stark contrast to the bustling city outside its walls. Here, you’ll find the final resting places of famous poets like John Keats and Percy Shelley. The cemetery is a beautiful, peaceful spot, filled with cypress trees and marble tombstones that whisper tales of the city’s vibrant past.
2. The Appian Way
Next, I took a stroll down the Appian Way, one of the oldest roads in Rome. A walk here is like stepping back in time, with ancient Roman tombs and ruins lining the way. It’s a bit out of the city, but well worth the trip. Rent a bike, pack a picnic and enjoy a leisurely day exploring this historic route.
3. Quartiere Coppede
Quartiere Coppede is a hidden architectural gem that will leave you spellbound. This small, eccentric district is characterized by its unique blend of Art Nouveau, medieval, Baroque, and ancient Greek influences. The whimsical designs of the buildings here are unlike anything else in Rome. Be sure to visit the Fountain of the Frogs in the heart of the district.
4. Centrale Montemartini
The Centrale Montemartini is a former power plant turned museum, where ancient Roman statues stand against a backdrop of industrial machinery. The contrast between the classical art and the industrial architecture is striking, and the result is a unique, captivating museum experience that’s off the beaten path.

Last but not least, I visited the Aventine Keyhole. This unassuming door on the Aventine Hill offers a unique view of St. Peter’s Basilica perfectly framed in the keyhole. It’s a magical experience that leaves everyone in awe.
